The Society for Studies in American Naturalism (SSAN) was established in 2023 to bring together the authors societies of Theodore Dreiser, Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, and Jack London in a collective effort to expand naturalism studies beyond single-author foci to explore more diverse areas of study, ranging from critical race and gender and sexuality studies to ecocriticism and digital humanities. The Society aims to foster deeper collaboration among new, established, and independent scholars in the United States and beyond and to promote awareness and interest in the relevance of U.S. literary naturalism in current and future scholarship.
Studies in American Naturalism is published for the Society for the Study of American Naturalism. SAN publishes critical essays, documents, notes, bibliographies, and reviews concerning American literary naturalism, broadly conceived. It presents contributions illuminating the texts and contexts of naturalism across all genres from its nineteenth-century origins to its twentieth- and twenty-first century transformations.Â
